Introduction


The Columbia Spotted Frog is found in North America from northern British Columbia and the Alaskan Panhandle south to Oregon. It generally occurs between the Rocky Mountains and the Coast and Cascade Mountains, but approaches the coast in a few locations (Fraser and Chilliwack Rivers near Chilliwack and Stave Lake, and the Stikine, Nass and Skeena Rivers) (Matsuda et al. 2006). This species is generally found close to water (ponds, lakes and slow-moving streams) and is cold-tolerant, occurring fairly far north as well as up to the treeline (Matsuda et al. 2006).

This frog closely resembles the Oregon Spotted Frog. It is an olive, light brown or tan, robust frog with webbed hind feet, black spots, black-mottled sides (sometimes with red tubercles), tan stripe on the upper jaw and red, salmon or orange pigment on the belly and legs (Matsuda et al. 2006).

Diet includes insects, arachnids, and mollusks (AmphibiaWeb 2012).
